Getting Started with SweepTag

Get SweepTag up and running in 5 minutes. This guide covers installation, first-time setup, and your first barcode.

Installation

Requirements

  • iOS 14+ or Android 7+
  • App: Available on App Store and Google Play
  • Optional: Lansweeper account (for IT infrastructure barcoding)

Install Steps

  1. Open your device's app store

    • iOS: App Store
    • Android: Google Play
  2. Search for "SweepTag" and tap Install

  3. Wait for download to complete (~80 MB)

  4. Launch the app and follow the setup wizard

First Launch: Setup Wizard

When you open SweepTag for the first time, you'll see the Welcome Screen with three options:

Option 1: Barcode Enthusiast (Simplest)

Best for: Just generating and printing barcodes
What you get: Access to barcode tools immediately
Next step: Go to Generate Your First Barcode

Option 2: Create a Local Database (Recommended for most)

Best for: Managing your own assets (tools, equipment, collections)
What you get:

  • A blank database to add your assets
  • Custom fields (9 data types to choose from)
  • Barcode generation for each asset

Setup takes: ~2 minutes

Steps:

  1. Tap "Create Local Database"
  2. Choose a template (IT Equipment, Tools, AV Gear, Furniture, or Blank)
  3. Name your database (e.g., "My Tools" or "Lab Equipment")
  4. Done! Your database is ready to add assets

Option 3: Connect to Lansweeper (For IT professionals)

Best for: Barcoding your entire IT infrastructure
What you get:

  • Access to all your Lansweeper assets
  • Automatic asset sync
  • Multi-site support
  • Custom field creation
  • Barcode write-back to Lansweeper

Setup takes: ~3 minutes

Steps:

  1. Tap "Connect to Lansweeper"
  2. Enter your Lansweeper API URL (found in Lansweeper Settings › API)
  3. Generate a Personal Access Token (PAT) in Lansweeper
  4. Paste the PAT into SweepTag
  5. SweepTag auto-discovers all authorized sites
  6. Done! You're connected

Generate Your First Barcode

Scenario A: Barcode Enthusiast (No Database)

  1. Open the Codes tab (bottom navigation)
  2. Tap "+" button in the header
  3. Enter barcode details:
    • Name: Any text (e.g., "My Asset")
    • Value: What the barcode encodes (e.g., asset ID, URL, serial number)
  4. Choose format: QR Code or Code 128
  5. Tap "Generate"
  6. Preview appears with your barcode
  7. Print or Share: Tap the print icon or share button

Scenario B: Local Database Owner

  1. Open the Assets tab (bottom navigation)
  2. Select your database from the list
  3. Tap "+" to add an asset
  4. Fill in the details:
    • Name: Asset name (required)
    • Other fields: Depends on your template
  5. Tap "Save"
  6. Asset created! Now you can generate a barcode for it
  7. To generate barcode:
    • From Assets tab: Long-press the asset → "Generate Barcode"
    • Or go to Codes tab → Your database appears → Tap to generate

Scenario C: Lansweeper User

  1. Open the Assets tab (bottom navigation)
  2. Select "Lansweeper" and your site
  3. Browse or search for an asset
  4. Open the asset detail
  5. Tap "Generate Barcode" button
  6. Configure barcode options:
    • Format: QR or Code 128
    • Link type: Direct to asset, Lansweeper URL, Custom URL
  7. Tap "Generate"
  8. Barcode appears! Print, share, or preview

Quick Barcode Overview

What's a QR Code?

  • Encodes: URLs, text, asset keys, or custom data
  • Scannable: With any smartphone camera or barcode scanner
  • Best for: Asset tracking, quick links, full data storage
  • Size: Varies based on data (small to medium)

What's a Code 128?

  • Encodes: Numbers and basic text (smaller than QR)
  • Scannable: With dedicated barcode scanners
  • Best for: Dense labeling on small items
  • Size: Narrow horizontal bar pattern

What Can You Encode in a Barcode?

SweepTag supports several link types:

Asset Key (Default)

  • Encodes: Unique identifier for the asset (e.g., asset-12345)
  • Useful for: Tracking the specific asset in your system

Lansweeper URL

  • Encodes: Direct link to the asset in Lansweeper
  • Useful for: Linking to full asset details in your IT system
  • Only for: Lansweeper users

Custom URL

  • Encodes: Any URL you specify (e.g., https://yoursite.com/assets/{id})
  • Useful for: Linking to custom systems or external tools
  • Customizable: Use {assetKey} or {id} placeholders

Custom Field Value

  • Encodes: Value from any custom field (e.g., serial number, barcode, SKU)
  • Useful for: Encoding specific asset properties
  • Only for: Local databases with custom fields

Print Your First Label

  1. Generate a barcode (see above)
  2. In the barcode preview, tap the print icon 🖨️
  3. Choose print size:
    • Small: 48 × 30 mm (2" × 1.2")
    • Medium: 70 × 45 mm (2.8" × 1.8")
    • Large: 100 × 60 mm (3.9" × 2.4")
  4. Choose content: Barcode only, or include name/value/date
  5. Tap "Print" → Select printer
  6. Done! Your label prints

Print Requirements

  • Needs: AirPrint printer (iOS) or network printer (Android)
  • Paper: Any size, but 4" × 6" thermal labels are ideal
  • Wireless: Printer must be on same network as your device

Scan Tab:

  • Tap to open camera
  • Point at any barcode
  • Automatically classifies scan type
  • Logs interaction in history

  • Integrations (add/manage Lansweeper connections)
  • Barcode configuration (default format, link type)
